If you’re a keen sports person or simply enjoy some active leisure time, your sports shoes are likely to smell bad at some point and the same can also be said for sandals.
Sweating in sports shoes or sandals will lead to a build-up of dirt, sweat and body oils . This will encourage the growth of bacteria, which cause smelly footwear, especially in hot conditions. The same issue will apply to footbeds and insoles, even if you’re wearing socks.
Additionally, if sandals and sports shoes are not adequately cleaned, bacterial growth will lead to decomposition of the materials and stitching. This is especially common in natural materials such as leather and cork as they are broken down by bacteria for nourishment, leading to them rotting and reducing the useful lifetime of your footwear.
Once your sandals or sports shoes have been used a few times and are starting to smell, use Footwear Refresh to clean, deodorize and freshen. Footwear Refresh is great for all non-waterproof footwear, including sports shoes, sneakers, sandals, climbing shoes, and next to skin areas of footwear, such as insoles and footbeds.
Alternative footwear cleaning products broadly fall into one of two categories: non-specific cleaners or freshening products. Both have disadvantages when cleaning non-waterproof and next to skin areas of footwear.
Non-specific cleaners will remove bacterial build up but are not designed to provide long term odor protection.
Footwear freshening products will mask odors but fail quickly, as they do not remove the bacteria which cause odor. Additionally, these products are often solvent based and flammable.
